Obesity: Is Your Thyroid to Blame?
by Alymanta Credibilener
http://www.incrediblefood.com

In a society that places so much emphasis on appearance,
folks are joining gyms, counting carbs and trying one diet
after another, in an attempt to lose those extra few
pounds. At no other time in our history have we been so
obsessed with personal image. We~ve been told by various
experts that we need to reduce our intake of salt, sugar,
fats, carbs, caffeine and calories. While eating sensibly
and establishing a regular exercise regimen is both
necessary and healthy, many take their commitment to a
healthy lifestyle a bit too far. For some, even these
measures don~t eliminate the problem.

While overeating is obviously partly to blame, there are
five million Americans who currently have hypothyroidism,
a medical condition that prevents the body from correctly
regulating its metabolism. People with the disease are
simply unable to lose weight. It doesn't matter what they
eat or don't eat, whether they exercise or not. Many of them
even gain weight when they take up an exercise program or
commit to a healthier diet.

While hypothyroidism is treatable with oral medication
and/or surgery, many people are unaware of the fact that
they, indeed, suffer from the illness. Symptoms which are
common to the disease are fatigue, weakness, weight gain
(or the inability to lose weight), rough/dry skin, dry or
coarse hair, hair loss, constipation, muscle cramps/aches,
depression, irritability, abnormal menstrual cycles, memory
loss, diminished libido and cold intolerance (pronounced
inability to cope with low temperatures).

Though this illness is usually easy to diagnose ~ often,
only a blood test is needed ~ the effects of hypothyroidism
will increase in severity without proper treatment, and ~
under some circumstances ~ can even be fatal. If you
should experience any of the known symptoms, it~s important
to contact your physician and initiate testing. Since
everyone~s system is different, some will experience one or
two symptoms, while others may experience several or all
of them. On rare occasions, no symptoms are exhibited and
the patient either remains undiagnosed and untreated, or
the disease is found as the result of blood work being done
for some other health complaint.

While it would be irresponsible not to watch our dietary
intake, it's important to recognize that there may be other
medical factors at work with regard to obesity. Those of us
who are healthy should be able to lose weight by following
a diet and exercise plan. If it is not possible to lose
weight despite significant changes in your daily routine,
you may have hypothyroidism, and you need to get tested.
Treatment will help you get your life back.
